Vernal Pools

IMG_2129

Today I tagged along with my wife and daughter as they had a little outing to the Mather Field Vernal Pools with their girl scout troop.

The vernal pools are basically small basins that have a hard layer underneath them that prevents water from absorbing into the ground. As they evaporate tons of small wild flowers fill them in brilliant shows of gold, green, purple, and white.

It's nice to see areas like this put aside for protection. Especially since it is estimated that California has lost over 90% of it's vernal pools.
